Company
Semex is a global cattle genetics company based in Canada, providing dairy and beef breeders with semen, embryos, genomic services, and herd management tools. Through Boviteq, its embryo production division in the USA and Canada, Semex offers OPU and in vitro fertilization services that help breeders multiply the genetics of their best animals.
The Boviteq app connects veterinarians and their clients with this process. It brings every step of IVF production into one place - from donors and collection sessions to embryo results and semen and embryo inventory - giving users real-time access to results and key performance indicators from their mobile devices. -
what we did
We designed and developed the Boviteq multi-language mobile application from the ground up for veterinarians and breeders who work with Semex’s IVF services. The app follows the full production journey - from registering an account and managing clients to adding donors, tracking collection sessions through every lab stage, and accessing semen and embryo inventory in real time.
The experience was built around the daily work of a vet who manages many farms at once, while giving each client a clear view of their own animals and results. Special attention was given to turning dense laboratory data into clear, scannable screens, handling real-world edge cases such as empty states and large datasets, and keeping frequent actions only a few taps away.
- Onboarding & secure access: Multi-step registration with a choice between Boviteq USA and Canada, account approval states, secure authentication for vets and clients, Face ID sign-in, password recovery, and multi-language support.
- Dashboard & analytics: Key performance indicators and production analytics by quarter, year to date, or custom range, plus a category menu with badges for quick access to every section.
- Client management: A searchable client list with quick actions to call, email, or view on the map, client creation and editing, and detailed client statistics.
- Donor profiles: Complete donor records with registration number, breed, age, owner, and collection site, linked sessions and inventory, a recent production snapshot, and haul-in and haul-out history.
- Production session tracking: Session overviews with dam, sire, and semen details, stage filtering from oocytes and cleavage to morulas and the final report, and detailed results with cleavage rates and predictions.
- Semen & embryo inventory: Structured lists and detailed records covering production method, dates, grades, export eligibility, semen type, and status, including disposed and trypsin-treated embryos.
- Filters & sorting: Filtering by donor, availability, and lot, sorting by arrival date, and search within long filter lists, with changes applied automatically.
- Notifications & settings: Push and in-app notifications for events such as new donor arrivals, plus account, password, notification, and theme settings and direct contacts for Boviteq USA and Canada.
- Development & release: Cross-platform development and release on iOS and Android, turning the design into a production-ready product for vets and breeders.
Challenges
-
01
Turning a Lab-Driven Process into a Mobile Experience
IVF production at Boviteq moves through a sequence of laboratory stages - from oocyte collection and fertilization to cleavage, morula development, embryo destination, and the final report. The challenge was to translate these workflows into a mobile experience that vets can follow in the field, keeping every stage accurate and understandable without requiring laboratory expertise.
-
02
Structuring Deeply Connected Data
The product relies on a layered data model: each veterinarian works with multiple clients, each client owns multiple donors, and every donor is linked to production sessions, semen, and embryos. The team needed to design a navigation system that lets users move naturally between these levels - from a client overview to a single embryo record - without losing context or getting lost in nested screens.
-
03
Making Large Genetic Inventories Searchable
Semen and embryo inventories can include hundreds of records, each described by donor, sire, lot, grade, semen type, export eligibility, and current status. The experience needed a filtering and sorting system powerful enough for professional use, yet simple enough to operate on a small screen, helping users find the right record in seconds rather than scrolling through long lists.
-
04
Supporting Multiple Roles, Regions, and Languages
The app serves both veterinarians and the breeders they work with, across two operating regions - Boviteq USA and Boviteq Canada - and a diverse, multilingual audience. The product needed secure authentication for both roles, a registration and approval flow that routes users to the right region, language support, and timely notifications, so every user sees the information relevant to them.
Registration & Secure Access
Users sign in through Boviteq’s secure authentication page, using one set of credentials across the company’s digital services. New users go through a short step-by-step registration with a clear progress indicator, starting by selecting the IVF laboratory they work with. This connects each account to the right lab from the very first step, so every user sees only the production data that belongs to them.
Performance Dashboard
The home dashboard brings key IVF performance indicators together on one screen - total embryos, donors, and cycles, oocytes and embryos per donor, and embryo development rates. Each metric is benchmarked against Boviteq and industry averages, with quick switching between Dairy Genomic, Dairy 2yr+, and Beef programs and flexible period selection.
Client Management & Statistics
Veterinarians can manage all their clients from one searchable list, with quick actions to call, send an email, or open a farm location on the map. Each client profile brings together production statistics, donors, sessions, and inventory, making it easy to review results and prepare for client conversations.
Donor Profiles
Donor profiles present all essential information in one place, including registration number, breed, age, owner, and collection site. Linked sessions, embryo inventory, and a recent production snapshot give users a complete view of each donor’s history and performance over time.
Production Session Tracking
Each session follows the IVF process stage by stage - from oocyte numbers and cleavage to morulas, destination submission, and the final report. A visual stage indicator and structured result cards present oocytes in maturation, good and poor quality morulas, cleavage rates, and viable embryo predictions, making complex lab outcomes easy to read at a glance.
Semen & Embryo Inventory
The inventory organizes semen and embryos into clear, structured lists with key genetic details visible at a glance. Detailed record screens present dam and sire information, production method, dates, grades, semen type, and export eligibility, along with the current status of each embryo.
Smart Filters & Sorting
Flexible filters help users narrow large inventories by donor, availability, lot, and other parameters, with changes applied instantly in the background. Sorting by arrival date and built-in search for long filter lists make it easy to find the right record in seconds.
Conclusion
The Boviteq project brought an entire IVF production workflow into one cohesive mobile product for veterinarians and breeders. From design to development, the work focused on translating complex laboratory processes, layered client and donor data, and large genetic inventories into clear, structured experiences that are easy to use in the field.
A performance dashboard with industry benchmarks, client and donor management, stage-by-stage session tracking, a searchable semen and embryo inventory, and timely notifications work together to support every step of the process. The result is a reliable, multi-language tool that gives Semex’s clients real-time visibility into their results and greater confidence in their breeding decisions.
